CU women record big win over MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (April 8) – Fresh off of a weekend that saw Cameron head tennis coach James Helvey record his 500th career victory, the Aggie women’s tennis team (9-8) today traveled south in search of their 9th win of the season and 501st win of Coach Helvey’s career. After a very hard-fought match, the Aggie women accomplished both of their goals. Today on the campus of Midwestern State University (9-6), Cameron defeated the Lone Star Conference rival Mustangs of MSU by the score 6-3.

“This was a good win because MSU is a fellow conference and regional team,” Coach Helvey said. “This was a big win for us. We needed it and we played great. We played really well and after we won two of the three doubles matches we just kept at it. Most importantly this was another win for our season record and it allows us to keep building our confidence.”

The Cameron women’s tennis team ended last week ranked #30 nationally, but has since moved up to #25 in the nation. The Midwestern women’s tennis team is currently ranked #32 in the nation.

“I’m very glad with where we are in the nation,” Coach Helvey said. “We are 9-8 overall, but we have played a tough 9-8. We had a very difficult schedule but I think that in the end it will pay off for us.”

Cameron won two of three doubles matches, taking the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Junior Irene George and freshman Whitney Renfurm won the No. 1 doubles match 8-2, while senior Megan deBlonk and junior Viviana Seca won the No. 2 doubles match 8-6.

All four of the above women’s tennis players also won their singles matches. George won the No. 1 singles match in an extremely exciting match, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 with her match required a third set tie-breaker. George’s doubles partner, Renfurm, won the No. 6 singles match by the score 6-1, 6-4.

Seca and deBlonk won their singles matches at the No. 4 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Seca won the No. 4 match by the score 6-2, 7-6, while deBlonk won the No. 3 match 6-1, 7-5.

“Irene George beat their No. 1 player in a third set tie-breaker. She really stepped it up big in the end,” Coach Helvey said. “Megan deBlonk also won a big match for us. Overall the girls played just great today.

Sophomore Carolina Mullor lost a heartbreaker in the No. 5 singles match, falling in a third and final set. Mullor narrowly lost the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. She did not play doubles today. Cameron’s other singles loss was also very close as senior Kim Romero lost the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-4.

CU’s only doubles loss on the afternoon came in the No. 3 position, where Romero and junior Sophia Rich lost another very close match. The final score of the match was 8-6. Rich did not play singles.

The Aggie men’s and women’s teams travel further south this weekend for their final big road trip of the 2007-2008 regular season. On Friday (April 11) the teams battle the University of the Incarnate Word at 9:00am, and St. Mary’s University at 2:00pm in San Antonio, Texas. The Aggies then travel to Austin, Texas on Saturday (April 12) to take on St. Edward’s University.

“We’ve got a big tournament this weekend in San Antonio, and today’s win really helps us going into that,” Coach Helvey said. “This victory helps, because if we get two more (NCAA) Division-II wins then we clinch a playoff spot in the NCAA Division-II national tournament.”

Cameron has six more regular season matches before the season concludes and heads into postseason play.
