Fantastic finish for CU at LSC's
CANYON, Texas (October 24) - The Cameron Aggie cross country team traveled to Canyon, Texas today to participate in the Lone Star Conference Championship meet. Today’s race was 8 kilometers in length and CU finished 4th out of 9 teams. For the first time in school history, the Aggies finished with three All-Conference runners. The top 10 runners to finish are awarded All-Conference status.
“It was awesome today and I’m very excited with how we ran,” Head coach Matt Aguero said. “I really thought there were four teams that had shot at winning it, and we were one of the four.”
CU finished with a total team score of 118, just 9 points behind third-place Eastern New Mexico.
Once again sophomore Julius Korir finished as Cameron’s top runner. Korir finished 3rd overall and his finish is the highest finish for a Cameron cross country runner at the LSC meet. He finished with an impressive time of 25:47:00.
“I’m really happy with how our top three runners ran,” Aguero said. “Julius gave us the highest conference finish ever for an Aggie, and this is the highest team finish in our history also.”
Senior Josh Stewart was Cameron’s second-highest finisher as he posted a time of 26:11:00 which earned him 8th overall.
“Josh made All-Conference for the first time at CU, but he was a three-time All-Conference runner at East Central before he transferred. I don’t know of anyone else that has been All-Conference four times in LSC history,” Aguero said.
Rounding out Cameron’s three top ten finishers was Junior Mohamad Khelalfa. He finished 10th overall with a time of 26:25:00.
“With one kilometer left, Mohamed was in 12th place and 10 meters behind Eastern New Mexico’s top runner and last year’s conference champion from ACU,” Aguero said. “I yelled to him that he had to pass those two to make All-Conference, and he nodded his head and looked at me very confidently. He ended up out-kicking both guys in the final stretch to finish 10th overall.”
Amos Stang from Abilene Christian University took home the men’s individual title with a top time of 24:44:00. The Abilene Christian Wildcats (33 points) went on to win today’s team title as well, repeating as LSC Champions.
“It felt great to have three All-Conference runners especially since Abilene Christian was the only other school to do that,” Aguero said. “All in all everybody ran great today and I’m really pleased with today results.”
Senior Casey Kreger finished the event in 47th place with a time of 28:45.00, and junior Juan Ruiz finished in 50th place with a time of 28:57.00.
Rounding out CU’s scores were sophomore David Barmasai’s 54th place finish with a 29:31.00, and senior Guy Narcomey’s 61st place finish with a 33:33.00.
In two weeks (November 7) the Aggie cross country team will travel to Abilene, Texas to participate in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship meet.
